The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Frankfurt is investigating allegations of tax fraud involving the import of steel by an engineering company in the Rhine-Neckar region. According to an EPPO statement, customs officers from Stuttgart carried out searches at the company's office premises in December, while British tax authorities also conducted simultaneous searches at the seller's location, seizing a significant amount of electronic data.
The investigation suggests that the German company incorrectly declared the origin of the steel as British in over 100 customs clearances. In reality, the steel was sourced from India and only passed through the UK before being imported into Germany. Under EU customs regulations, properly declaring the steel’s true origin would have resulted in a 25% increase in import duties, leading to estimated losses of several hundred thousand euros in public finances.
The steel imports under investigation took place over a 12-month period, beginning in March 2021, with a total value exceeding €2.9 million.
Additionally, in December 2024, the European Commission launched a functional review of the EU’s safeguard measures on steel imports, following a request from 13 EU member states. These countries are seeking the review due to shifts in trade flows.
