In March 2025, Japan’s exports of ferrous scrap reached 645,569 metric tons (mt), marking a 25.1% increase from 515,832 mt in March 2024, according to customs data. For the January-March period, the country exported a total of 1.87 million mt of scrap, reflecting a 16.8% year-on-year rise.


During this period, Vietnam emerged as the largest importer of Japanese scrap, purchasing 838,562 mt, an increase of 22.6% from the previous year. South Korea and Bangladesh followed, importing 353,565 mt and 274,023 mt of scrap, respectively. South Korea's imports saw a decline of 24.7%, while Bangladesh experienced a significant 200.4% increase.


Japanese scrap exports to Taiwan totaled 142,811 mt for the January-March period, a slight increase from 140,755 mt during the same period last year.
