World Steel has announced the recipients of the 2024 Steel Sustainability Champions award, recognizing 12 companies for their exemplary commitment to sustainable development in 2023. This initiative, now in its seventh year, aims to acknowledge World Steel members actively engaged in sustainability efforts.
The 2024 Steel Sustainability Champions include ArcelorMittal, BlueScope Steel Limited, China Steel Corporation (CSC), Emirates Steel Arkan, HBIS Group Co., Ltd., JFE Steel Corporation, JSW Steel Limited, POSCO Holdings, Tata Steel, Tenaris, Ternium, and voestalpine AG.
Tata Steel and Tenaris have been recognized as Champions for seven consecutive years, maintaining their status since the programme's inception in 2018. Notably, the number of qualifying members has steadily increased since the programme's launch, initially honoring six members.
To qualify as Sustainability Champions, members must adhere to specific criteria, including signing the World Steel Sustainability Charter, providing evidence of meeting 20 criteria across environmental, social, governance, and economic fields (ESGE), submitting Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data covering over 60% of their crude steel production, and being shortlisted in a World Steel Steelie Award category or recognized in the World Steel Safety and Health Recognition Programme.
Champions receive certificates during the April Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Board of Members.
