Stainless steel is an alloy of iron that is resistant to rusting and corrosion. The invention of stainless steel followed a series of scientific developments, starting in 1798 when chromium was first shown to the French Academy by Louis Vauquelin. In the early 1800s, British scientists James Stoddart, Michael Faraday, and Robert Mallet observed the resistance of chromium-iron alloys ("chromium steels") to oxidizing agents. Robert Bunsen discovered chromium's resistance to strong acids. The corrosion resistance of iron-chromium alloys may have been first recognized in 1821 by Pierre Berthier, who noted their resistance against attack by some acids and suggested their use in cutlery.
In the 1840s, both of Britain's Sheffield steelmakers and then Krupp of Germany were producing chromium steel with the latter employing it for cannons in the 1850s.
In 1861, Robert Forester Mushet took out a patent on chromium steel in Britain.
In 1913, Harry Brearley of Sheffield, UK discovered “rustless” steel. After the initial discovery, further improvements to stainless steel occurred at a fairly rapid pace. In 1919, Elwood Haynes obtained a patent on martensitic stainless steel, in 1929 William J. Kroll of Luxembourg was the first to discover precipitation-hardening stainless steel, and in 1930 duplex stainless steel was first produced in Sweden at the Avesta Ironworks.
Then, there are the milestones in the history of stainless steel below:
The first stainless steel aircraft was created in 1931 by the American company Boeing.
Stainless steel became a popular material for kitchen sinks in the 1930s due to its durability and resistance to corrosion.
Type 430 stainless steel is a ferritic chromium alloy that has good corrosion resistance and is often used in applications where high temperature oxidation resistance is not required.
In 1954, the first stainless steel underwater TV camera was manufactured, which was a significant milestone in the field of underwater exploration and research.
The world's first-ever tidal power station with stainless steel turbine blades was completed in the Brittany region of France in 1966.
The Thames Barrier, located in London, which was made of stainless steel and concrete and built between 1974 and 1984 to prevent flooding in the city during high tides and storm surges.
According to the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), global production of stainless steel reached 31 million metric tons in 2010.
About 11 million washing machines with stainless steel drums were produced in China in 2010.
Today, China is the largest producer of stainless steel in the world. ALLIANZ STEEL GROUP CO.,LTD. Is one of the leading stainless steel producers and supplier in Hunan, China.
